About This Place

Cheng-Du Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Mansfield, MA, is a true sanctuary for lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. This beloved eatery offers a rich tapestry of flavors that celebrate the vast culinary traditions of China, making every meal a vibrant, mouthwatering adventure. From the delicate crunch of their Crab Rangoon to the bold warmth of Hot and Sour Soup, each dish is a testament to skillful preparation and thoughtful seasoning.

The menu is a treasure trove of classic favorites and chef’s specials designed to satisfy diverse palates. Renowned dishes like General Gau's Chicken arrive perfectly crisped, expertly balancing savory and sweet profiles without overwhelming the senses. The Pu Pu Platter for two offers an enticing sampler, ideal for sharing as the savory aromas and textures mingle delightfully. Seafood lovers will be enchanted by the Sizzling Seafood Platter and the sumptuous Shrimp and Lobster Sauce, while the Mongolian Beef and Boneless Spare Ribs offer succulent, tender bites that linger on the tongue with rich, harmonious flavors.

Cheng-Du also excels in poultry dishes — the Whole Peking Duck and Mom's Chicken Plate are standout offerings, showcasing both tradition and innovation with each carefully crafted plate. Vegetables are not forgotten, with dishes like Garlic String Beans with Chicken and Chicken with Pea Pods and Mushrooms providing fresh, crisp contrasts to the more indulgent selections.

Dining here feels like being wrapped in a warm, inviting embrace. The restaurant exudes a welcoming and familial atmosphere where May, the heart and soul of Cheng-Du, treats every guest like an old friend—remembering names and favorite orders that add an intimate, personalized touch to the experience. It’s easy to feel cherished, whether you're settling in for a quiet dinner or celebrating a special occasion.

Guests consistently praise the attentive, friendly service, as well as the accommodating nature of the kitchen. Notably, Cheng-Du offers a thoughtful array of gluten-free options, catering expertly to those with celiac disease—a rarity in many Chinese restaurants. As Patricia Pilalas shared, the staff’s knowledge and care turn what might be a limiting dietary experience into a joyous culinary treat. Ken Joensson echoes this sentiment, highlighting the quality and reliable gluten-free modifications that make every visit comfortable and enjoyable.

Portion sizes are generous and made to satisfy hungry appetites, as Rob Novack discovered shortly after moving to the area. From the lively textures of Chicken and Vegetable Fried Rice on the lunch menu to decadent desserts like Chocolate Fortune Cookies, every plate promises consistency and quality. Alexis Ogden’s experience on a special occasion further highlights the flexible and warm approach of the kitchen, happily customizing dishes like the curry shrimp to perfection.

For a restaurant that combines authentic Chinese flavors with heartfelt hospitality and a keen attention to dietary needs, Cheng-Du Restaurant stands out as a cherished local gem. Whether you’re craving the classic tang of Sweet and Sour Pork, the fiery kick of Kung Pao Trio, or the comforting, homey flavors of Mom’s Chicken Plate, this Mansfield treasure invites you to savor every bite and feel right at home.

My son has been gluten free due to celiac disease for 3 years. He hasn’t had Chinese food due to very limited options for gluten free Chinese food. The food was fantastic and they are very knowledgeable about celiac. It is pricey but worth it for a treat.

Recently moved to the area and so happy to have found a great quality Chinese restaurant. Chicken and vegetable fried rice was delicious. Wide variety and large portion sizes, including on lunch menu. Very friendly service as well. Will definitely be back!

I came for a special occasion and I could not have been more happy with the how fast the food came out, the quality of the food and taste and the accommodations made by the chef for my meal. I ordered the half and half but requested my shrimp be made in a curry sauce. They happily obliged. We also ordered the house rice ( it was so good we took an additional order to go home with [because we finished the first order] along with left overs) and pepper steak. The steak was cooked perfectly. Very easy to chew and not “chewy”! The finishing touch was our amazing waitress packaging up our food-to-go, so we didn’t have to. This was my first time here and we will definitely be back… often!!

This is my favorite Chinese food place. I would give it 6 stars if I could. Everything is great but we particularly like the General Gau's Chicken here. Always crispy and not too much batter. Even the presentations are great. My kids love their chicken wings. They also do an amazing job with Gluten Free options. Almost every menu item can be made gluten free. Mai Tais are great too and you can order them to go.

One of our favorite restaurants in Mansfield. May has a heart of gold and we love that she knows us by name...and our order by heart. We just need to sit down and she knows how to take care of us throughout the entire meal. My husband has been going to Cheng-Du a good 35 years (and me 13 years) and couldn't think of having a delicious Chinese dinner without May or Cheng-Du. Highly recommended!!

I felt like good Chinese food and this place looked good. Friendly owner took my order I had beef teriyaki and shrimp fried rice. The beef teriyaki was some of the best I ever had, the shrimp fried rice was good but I like my shrimp cooked little more for a better crunch not bad just a preference issue. Will be back to try other things
